What are the Academy Awards but an excuse for Hollywood to party down? Among the Los Angeles spots at which the beautiful people will be seen on Oscar night:

*The Governors Ball: Held at the Shrine Auditorium, the menu is from Spago’s Wolfgang Puck, and the star power’s colossal. Most winners stop by to show off their new mantel displays.

*Elton John’s Bash: His third annual AIDS fund-raiser has moved from the swank Maple Drive — where ’94 winners Steven Spielberg, Bruce Springsteen, and Tom Hanks celebrated — to the equally swank Four Seasons Hotel. With Jim Carrey, Liam Neeson, Hanks, and Rita Wilson on the host committee, this is a hot ticket.

*Steve Tisch/Vanity Fair Party: Since Tisch produced Forrest Gump, expect this Mortons-based bash to have more creme de la creme than a box of you know what.

*Spago: Wolfgang Puck sat out ’94’s festivities after the death of agent and party meister Swifty Lazar. This year, he’ll host, but does he share Swifty’s genius for guest lists?

*Women In Film Party: The party is cosponsored by the New Orleans Film Commission, the theme is Mardi Gras, and the locale is Dan Aykroyd‘s unavoidable House of Blues.

*Miramax at Chasen’s: The indie film company salutes the venerable Hollywood haunt, which is scheduled to be torn down after closing April 1. No doubt Miramax’s Pulp Fiction crowd (Quentin Tarantino, John Travolta, et al.) will hold court.

*Hollywood Roosevelt: Not much of a celebrity draw, though in ’93 this mixer’s most well-known guest was Travolta, who complained about never getting invited to Hollywood parties anymore.

*An Alcohol-Free Party: Here’s a first. Sponsored by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency at the Bel Age and hosted by Heather Thomas and Lorna Luft, the fete will include teetotalers Alec Baldwin, Kim Basinger, Warren Beatty, Annette Bening, and Best Supporting Actor nominee Martin Landau. Cheers.
