THERE GOES MY BABY Rick Schroeder, Dermot Mulroney (1994, Orion, R, priced for rental) Callow pop historians like to point to John Kennedy’s assassination in November 1963 as the point when Everything in America Started to Go Wrong, but for writer-director Floyd Mutrux (American Hot Wax), the summer of ’65 was when innocence really got lost. The graduating class of Westwood High has a tough future in front of it: the Watts riots, Vietnam, and, of course, the closing of the local burger joint. Almost every line of Baby‘s dialogue quivers with a portent of the cultural quakes to come, as if Mutrux is determined to provide the connection between American Graffiti and Apocalypse Now. Even so, he concocts an almost palatable slice of bang-you-in-the-head nostalgia. C
