RESTRAINT Sherry Sonnett (Simon & Schuster, $21) The title and the cover art (a woman’s manicured hand clenching a man’s) offer some warning of what’s to come: sex, erotica, and, well, more sex. In fact, the book’s packaging is enough to draw you into what is actually a thriller about a no-nonsense career woman who becomes waylaid by her own lust. Sonnett’s suspenseful plot and turgid writing so forcefully ensnare the reader that one begins muttering to the protagonist, ”For God’s sake, put your shirt on and go find the bad guys!” In the end, though, Sonnett’s sensual deviations are not distracting enough to damage the well-crafted tale of a woman’s moral fall. B+
