Albert Brooks is at the top of his game as a two-bit recruiter who stumbles upon the best young phenom (Brendan Fraser) since Babe Ruth in The Scout. The only catch: This rookie has the mind of a child — possibly a crazy child. As the self-serving scout subtly evolves from reluctant babysitter to responsible human being, Brooks alternately coddles, kvetches, and cracks wise, lobbing verbal change-ups as only he can. And director Michael Ritchie depicts the major-league media circus with his slyest satirical touch since Semi-Tough. B+
