At first, she’s your average mad-at-the-world teenage orphan (Hilary Swank), who happens to go to a school where student monitors patrol the halls like storm troopers. But faster than you can say, ”Huh?” along comes old Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita), who takes the kid to a monastery and teaches her to love life as she does killer karate kicks. This imbecilic adventure includes a subplot about a broken-winged hawk, a search for the right prom dress, and scenes in which Miyagi’s monk friends go ”Zen bowling” and dance to rock music in their temple. ”Monks having good time,” observes Miyagi. At least somebody is in The Next Karate Kid. D-
