What Joseph Heller is reading

I am presently reading the Peter Ackroyd biography Dickens. Charles Dickens is a person who brings out the best in biographers, and Peter Ackroyd is always excellent at everything, although it might help (the reader) to have already read an earlier biography. Next will be the novel In the Lake of the Woods by Tim O’Brien — who certainly ranks among the best writers we have. Alice Munro is not only readable but rereadable, and I look forward to her newest collection of short stories, Open Secrets. And then will come The Shipping News, a novel about which I keep hearing more praise.
