Director Rob Reiner’s commercial instincts have been so surefooted over the years that the colossal ickiness of this recent effort is confounding. A ridiculously obvious satirical fable about a sixth grader on a global quest to find a new set of parents, North is lousy with cultural stereotypes (obnoxious Texans, at-one-with-nature Eskimos), and top-heavy with gratuitous celebrity casting (Reba McEntire? Abe Vigoda?). As an addition to a mercifully underpopulated genre — the-Bugsy-Malone-kids-acting-like-adults film — this may have some merit, but it’s hard to imagine what the erstwhile Meathead was thinking when he made it.
