On The Mad Twenties, backed by a jazz band that takes things to the top (and over), cabaret king Bobby Short revels in the delirious lyrics of ”Nagasaki,” slides sinuously through ”Sweet So and So,” and waxes dramatic on ”Laugh, Clown, Laugh.” There’s more sophistication — but less variety and panache — in Bobby Short Celebrates Rodgers & Hart, a mostly ballads trio session.
