Early in this BBC production a narrator announces: ”This is a film about what happened to Anne Rice before she became a writer.” Whereupon we are presented with roughly 10 minutes of supernatural bosh about the Interview With the Vampire author’s hometown of New Orleans. Of course, such stuff is Rice’s stock in trade, but her prose is what makes it convincing. Here, it comes off as supernatural bosh. By the time the preciously portentous Anne Rice: Birth of the Vampire (weighted down with BBC News-style readings from Vampire and arty camera work) gets around to chronicling the tragedies that shaped Rice’s vision, you feel guilty for having lost faith in the Birth itself.
