A likably low-key bunch of TV movies have been made from the English crime novels of Liza Cody, featuring the detective Anna Lee. The latest,Stalker, finds Anna, played by Imogen Stubbs, romantically involved with one of her clients (Peter Firth, of Shadowlands) and stalked by a very bad man from another case. The two plotlines, which run in a neat parallel, converge just as neatly at the end. And one of the pleasures of this series is watching the way Cody (and in this case, screenwriter Douglas Watkinson) adapts American hard-boiled detective dialogue to the rough streets of London. Anna Lee is a novel creation — a spunky private eye, one who disguises her intelligence and skepticism beneath a girlish ponytail and a wide smile. B
