Live! Tonite! Sold Out!

Until now, the only small-screen performance most Nirvana fans ever got a chance to see was the band’s slickly unslick MTV Unplugged set. With this 83-minute tape of interviews, live footage, home-video goofing, and 15 songs, ranging from crossover hits like ”Come As You Are” and ”Smells Like Teen Spirit” to the grittier, less user-friendly ”Love Buzz,” you get a much better sense of the raw, sloppy energy that first started Kurt Cobain’s band on its meteoric rise. But what Live! Tonite! Sold Out! may do best is shut up people who babble endlessly about how Nirvana revolutionized music or symbolized a generation’s angst. They were just three guys playing really hard, unpredictable, and unpolished punk rock. B+
