The edge is long gone from Nick Lowe, a major player in the late-’70s London new-wave scene. But his old bluster has been replaced by a strongly melodic, low-key songwriting touch that features his usual sardonic lyrical twists. Bird has a few too many lightweight ballads on The Impossible Bird, yet some tracks (the chugging, Creedence-like ”Trail of Tears” or the deliciously dark ”The Beast in Me”) rank with Lowe’s all-time highs.
