Bitter Moon Peter Coyote, Hugh Grant (1994, New Line, R, priced for rental) It’s a love story, an erotic thriller, a grotesque comedy. Roman Polanski’s latest film may be nuts-no, it’s definitely nuts-but it’s also spellbinding. Coyote stars as a disabled writer on a cruise who describes to a total stranger (Grant) intimate details of his and his wife’s sexual history. Beginning ever so sweetly, these flashbacks soon turn kinky and pathologically obsessive, but Polanski cuts through the menace with a cruelly funny edge: Going overboard is dangerous, he warns, but getting there can be a hoot.
