Not since Trudy Kockenlocker got pregnant by an anonymous soldier in 1944’s The Miracle of Morgan’s Creek has such a commotion been created over an unwed mom as in The Snapper. An Irish father (Colm Meaney) and his raucous brood experience some complex — and often funny — reactions when daughter Sharon (Tina Kellegher) gets ”up the pole.” Stephen Frears’ comedy (written by The Commitments‘ Roddy Doyle) is a raw and spicy slice of life that is more affecting than it might initially seem.
