Serious Steve Martin (the man who appeared on Broadway in ”Waiting for Godot”) battles funny Steve Martin (the wild and crazy guy who danced in ”All of Me”) for the soul of this contemporary melodrama based on George Eliot’s 19th-century novel ”Silas Marner”—and the struggle takes its toll. As a lonely, miserly man who, through the title’s labored circumstances, adopts a little girl, Martin (who also wrote the script) veers unconvincingly between pathos and buffoonery. With serious Gabriel Byrne as the girl’s natural father and funny Catherine O’Hara as a sympathetic neighbor.
