Master classical violinist Perlman’s exquisite tone and exceptional facility are not enough to carry him on this jazz date. While he and authoritative pianist Peterson work well enough on ballads (Peterson’s ”Why Think About Tomorrow?” is the high point), Perlman’s performances on up-tempo numbers are sometimes rhythmically stiff, his ideas obvious. Pairing Peterson with jazz violinist Svend Asmussen would have yielded subtler, more swinging results.
