In Far Away, So Close, Wim Wenders’ follow-up to his fascinating but ultimately disappointing Wings of Desire, angels once again descend to earth to observe humanity and one of them (Otto Sander) becomes human. Apart from a spectacularly vertiginous opening sequence, the film is an irritating mix of self-conscious style and existential verbiage, with gratuitous special appearances by Peter Falk and Lou Reed. Ultimately, the film is too far away and fails to pull us in. C-
