Released in conjunction with a new CD retrospective, the 2 1/2-hour documentary The Who: Thirty Years of Maximum R&B Live is the usual combo of concert footage and candid talking heads, with cool fashion tips thrown in. Focusing more on the venerable rock act’s B sides than on its hits, this tape is a bit dull for the average schmo. What makes it compelling, though, is the psychodrama that’s played out in the interviews: The bitterness and disgust that jaded-beyond-belief Pete Townshend displays toward the band and his craft manages to erase that nice glow of nostalgia.
