Director Bruce Beresford is winnowing his wish list for a leading lady to star opposite Clint Eastwood in The Bridges of Madison County. This week he was expected to fly three European contenders into Los Angeles for meetings. Unlike the book’s Iowa farm wife, none of them are Italian: Pernilla August (Best Intentions) and Lena Olin (Romeo Is Bleeding) are from Sweden, while Sonia Braga (Kiss of the Spider Woman) hails from Brazil. But the inside favorite on the Warner Bros. lot, according to studio sources, is Isabella Rossellini, thanks to her performances in Fearless and the current Wyatt Earp. Serious casting will commence July 11.
