The ’70s British glamsters Mott the Hoople mixed ornate frills, ’50s saxes, and bitter prophecies about the Union Jack with a beat that kept them rocking beneath the fancy embellishments. In their ”early years” (1970-72), the band tended to get mired in incoherent sludge. But a few songs here on Backsliding Fearlessly: The Early Years still pack a cynicism and guitar bite that sting.
