For the last two decades, limber-throated Al Jarreau has flitted between jazz, R&B, and pop. On Tenderness, he makes a valiant effort to find a common ground between them, but any sense of spontaneous fire is still missing, even with guests including David Sanborn and diva Kathleen Battle. The vocals are more free-spirited than usual, but Jarreau’s role as jazz’s prodigal son remains secure. B
