As the legendary illustrator of kids’ classics by E.B. White (Stuart Little, Charlotte’s Web), Laura Ingalls Wilder (the Little House series), and many others, Garth Williams has regaled a vast audience of youngsters for nearly half a century. But the artist’s occasional solo efforts haven’t won as much attention. This 1946 picture-book gem, The Chicken Book, based on an old English counting rhyme and out of print for years (it was reissued in 1990), tells the timeless tale of a feisty mother hen and the five chicks she teaches to fend for themselves and to scramble for their breakfast.
