To put it in simple black and white, there was about as much color at the 66th Academy Awards as there was in Schindler’s List. The result was a subdued parade of Oscar elegance. The evening’s most memorable trend? Everyone from Tom Cruise to Liam Neeson fell prey to the banded-collar tuxedo shirt, sans bow tie. Among the other style statements:

Glamour Do’s: Angela Bassett Sharon Stone Alec Baldwin Madeleine Stowe Rosie O’Donnell Laura Dern

Glamour Don’ts: Anna Nicole Smith Debbie Allen Jane Campion Christian Slater

Glam Couples: Claudia Schiffer & David Copperfield Steven Spielberg & Kate Capshaw Tom Hanks & Rita Wilson Liam Neeson & Natasha Richardson Beethoven & Missy

Bad-Hair Daze: Johnny Depp Holly Hunter Jeff Bridges Tommy Lee Jones (shorn for his role as Ty Cobb)

Stubble Trouble: Tom Cruise Jeremy Irons Bruce Springsteen Al Pacino Kenneth Branagh Steven Spielberg

Least-Supported Actresses: Geena Davis Marisa Tomei Winona Ryder Sally Kirkland Goldie Hawn Ellen Barkin
