Eager to duplicate the success of Sleepless in Seattle’s soundtrack, some opportunists at Sony have gathered more glitz your grandparents made whoopee to—without even a movie to go with it! The actual old-timers here (Ethel Merman, Al Jolson) have jazzier voices than the kiddies playing dress-up (Sinead O’Connor, Bryan Ferry), but the whole bunch sound so antique and genteel on More Songs for Sleepless Nights it’ll give rock fans the creeps. When the Beatles used to cover ”Ain’t She Sweet” and ”My Bonnie,” at least they knew how to make their kitsch move.
