Black Uhuru Liberation: The Island Anthology (Mango) In the early ’80s, Black Uhuru sounded like reggae’s future: a steamroller mix of anger and technology. This two-CD set commemorates the group’s finest lineup, when founder Duckie Simpson was joined by singers Michael Rose and Puma Jones, and the trio was backed up by producers-musicians Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare. You can’t argue with the selections (from albums like Red and the original mix of Anthem), but Sly and Robbie’s dated synth flourishes now sound like reggae’s past. B+ -TB
