NEIL DIAMOND Up on the Roof-Songs From the Brill Building (Columbia) On this camp-free love letter to an age, Diamond reverentially nods to that late ’50s- early ’60s era between classic pop and classic rock, digging into the stuff of ”A Groovy Kind of Love” and ”You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling.” Diamond contributes so little to the legacy of the originals (if anything the lush arrangements make them even more Muzak-ish than they’ve become), that the package ends up somewhere between a nice try and a well-meaning exercise in futility.
