Yes, you can compare Etheridge to Jon Bon Jovi — they’re both passionate mid-American rockers, are utterly sincere, and express that sincerity in sentimental cliches — but her music has an intimacy not often found in the boys’ club of mainstream rock. There’s also a darkness that’s very appealing, as Etheridge hurls her haunted rasp of a voice through songs of desperate, sometimes twisted love.
