Several of Garth Brooks’ best songs (”We Shall Be Free,” ”The Gift,” ”Learning to Live Again”) were written or cowritten by Stephanie Davis. Yet on her solo debut, Stephanie Davis, a collection of jazz-pop ditties, Western swing, and wistful looking-for-love ballads, Davis displays little of the insight and grit that marked the Brooks songs. As for her little-girl voice, imagine Nanci Griffith without the coy naïveté. B-
