The Stationmaster's Wife

Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s stylish version of Madame Bovary could have been subtitled Love, Despair, and the Whole Damn Thing. Trissenaar plays an oversexed woman married to a mousy stationmaster (Raab). She finds release for her love — well, lust at least — in the arms of both her butcher (”I’m going to buy some meat,” she announces to her enquiring husband) and her hairdresser. Nothing good comes of all this, of course. And, despite the fluidity of the filmmaking, The Stationmaster’s Wife is an awful lot of misery in just one sitting. C+
