Advertised as a Generation X- style first novel, Minus Time addresses much broader concerns than the anomie of the slacker set. Helen Urie lives in a future world of technological chaos and environmental disaster where everyone has a cause, but no one has a solution. Her nuclear family falls apart when her astronaut mother blasts off for a year in space, her father disappears into earthquake-relief work, and Helen goes in search of herself by trying on a secret identity. Minus Time describes an apocalyptic future that isn’t so different from our own, which is what makes it so strangely compelling. B+
