Edith Wharton’s unbearably sad and ironic novella, tracing the tragedy of a tortured, working-class man (Neeson) shunned by his New England village, is given decent enough treatment in Ethan Frome. The performances, especially that of Joan Allen as Frome’s hypochondriacal wife, are fine, and the film captures the book’s physically and emotionally wintry landscape. C+
