But Fred Gwynne, who died of cancer on July 2 at age 66, was best known as hapless flatfoot Francis Muldoon on Car 54, Where Are You? (1961-63) and huggable flattop Herman on The Munsters (1964-66). Typecast after The Munsters, the 6’5” TV icon proved in recent big-screen appearances-Fatal Attraction, My Cousin Vinny-that he could carry a role even without green greasepaint.
