Leave it to the Motion Picture Academy to choose the tried and true, if not the trite, when it comes to foreign films. Mediterraneo, last year’s Oscar winner about a band of misfit, inept soldiers stranded on a Greek isle throughout most of World War II is mildly engaging but not much more. Sentimental clichés rise up like heat waves from the situation: Why, there’s even a whore with a heart of gold. The scenery’s pleasant and so are the actors, but the home viewer should not expect too much. B-
