An irreverent black comedy about a precocious 21-year-old (the angular Martha Plimpton) who discovers she’s adopted and is aghast at the news. While searching for her biological parents (her fantasies about them are hilarious), she keeps her adoptive ones (Hector Elizondo and Mary Kay Place) nailed to the cross. Samantha has a real edge, but there’s a sweetness, too, in this surprising package. B+
