Teaming the genius of soul and soft-drink ads with pop producer Richard Perry yields mixed results. The lush treatment given familiar material like Leon Russell’s ”A Song for You” confines Ray Charles (I could listen to him sing the phone book, but not in a phone booth), but when Perry loosens things up and goes for the funk on My World, Brother Ray really starts testifying. If only they could take Charles and Mavis Staples’ vocal blend on ”Love Has a Mind of Its Own” and bottle it. B-
