Mark Frost’s feature debut is easily the video find of the week. Unlike David Lynch, his Twin Peaks partner, director Frost is interested in keeping us just a little off balance. Storyville follows a wealthy New Orleans scion (James Spader) whose boredom — he’s running for the Senate because there’s not much else to do — evaporates after a blackmail attempt opens a can of family worms. The convoluted plot keeps threatening to overheat, but time after time Frost recovers and heads in unexpectedly rewarding directions. As usual, Spader is superb: It’s the hero’s gradual discovery of his own decency that gives this movie its emotional heft. A-
