From the what-me-worry? way he broke the news that he and screen wife Judy Davis were splitting to his shockingly cruel attack on his astrology-mad girlfriend, Sydney Pollack portrayed mid-life crisis at its worst in Woody Allen’s Husbands and Wives — and won raves for his wounded-lion performance. ”My sister-in-law has a friend who knew vaguely that I was in show business,” says Pollack, the director of Tootsie and 14 other films. ”After the friend saw Husbands and Wives, she said, ‘Isn’t it wonderful your brother-in-law finally got a break?”’
