It’s not easy to take the charm out of a Rodgers and Hammerstein beauty, but this star-cluttered recording of The King and I, comes close. As the king, Ben Kingsley is notable mainly for not being Yul Brynner. And in the only governess role she hasn’t sung before, Julie Andrews plays an Anna so formidable she sometimes comes off less like Maria Von Trapp or Mary Poppins than like Margaret Thatcher. C
