The Wolfgang Press, purveyor of quirky dance pop, has always seemed a little smug, a little arch. On Queer, its second U.S. release, the British trio strives instead for a shimmering sound worthy of its homages to American soul. There’s still a lot of uninteresting filler, but the band shines on the luxurious ”A Girl Like You” (a college-radio hit) and on its eerie remake of Randy Newman’s ”Mama Told Me Not to Come.”
