Since the only modes Joe Cocker functions in are raw, rawer, and rawest, it’s particularly irksome to find four different producers on Night Calls undermining old Brillo Lungs with enough neat-as-a-pin, commercially correct smooth music to nearly drown him in slick. Still, give Cocker even just a whiff of blues (Prince’s ”Five Women”), funk (Tony Joe White’s ”Out of the Rain”), or melancholy (David Egan’s ”Please No More”), and all the sweet-scented air freshener in the world won’t cover up his foul, pungent snarls — God bless him.
