Europa, Europa

German political pressure may have kept Europa, Europa from an Oscar nomination this year (for Best Foreign Film), but this French-German coproduction will surely be remembered long after most of last year’s winners are forgotten. Directed by Agnieszka Holland (Angry Harvest) and adapted from Solomon Perel’s remarkable autobiography, it tells the true story of a German-Jewish teenager who survives the Nazi era through a combination of luck, happenstance, and deception — including several years passing as an ideal ”ethnic German” in a Hitler Youth school. The often nerve-racking drama is leavened occasionally with unexpected comic touches, though Holland’s penchant for symbolism sometimes gets a bit heavy-handed. Video plus: exceptionally clear, yellow, English subtitles. A-
