People Time

Tenor saxophonist Stan Getz was near death when these duets were recorded in Copenhagen last year, but there is no reason to sentimentalize — let alone apologize for — them. The music is astonishingly alive, robust, and brilliantly expressive; it ranks near the top of his accomplishments. Barron was Getz’s favorite pianist in recent years — a musician’s musician ever since he joined Dizzy Gillespie’s quintet nearly 30 years ago, though he’s probably best known as the leading force behind the band Sphere. You can’t fail to hear how deeply he and Getz inspired each other, enjoying an occasional virtuoso interplay but taking even greater pleasure in frequent bursts of romantic ardor. People Time is one of those records you’d take to a desert island. A+
