In case you missed the trailer for Beethoven, it appears, virtually intact, 20 minutes into the movie. As Paul Shaffer performs his rockin’-white-bread version of ”Roll Over Beethoven,” we see family man Charles Grodin confronting the horrors of life with a Saint Bernard: Grodin appearing at the front door with huge paw prints on his suit; Grodin finding dog slime on the banister; Grodin walking into his bedroom to encounter a wet, muddy Beethoven, who shakes himself off all over Grodin. And that’s about it for the money gags. This won’t be the first time — or the last — that an audience leaves the theater saying, ”The trailer was better.”
