Some candidates for the ''Scarlett'' miniseries
Some candidates for the ''Scarlett'' miniseries -- Actors we'd like to see in a TV version of ''Gone With the Wind''
Gone With the Wind gave producer David O. Selznick one of the biggest casting headaches of his career. Although his unquestioned choice for Rhett was Clark Gable (who had to be wooed from MGM, where he was under contract), finding someone to play Scarlett proved more difficult. He canvassed the country for a talented unknown, and tested everyone from Lucille Ball to Joan Crawford. But it wasn’t until December 1938 — when he had already begun filming the burning of Atlanta — that his brother introduced him to Vivien Leigh.
To save the producers of the Scarlett miniseries this sort of trouble, we offer the following casting suggestions:
RHETT’S MOTHER, MISS ELEANOR
Olivia de Havilland
COLUM O’HARA, AN IRISH COUSIN
La Toya Jackson
UNCONTESTED ROLES Bette Midler as Belle Watling and Shelley Winters as Aunt Pittypat
INTRODUCING Marlon Brando as Tara
ORIGINAL MUSIC Vanilla Ice
WARDROBE Nolan Miller, Bob Mackie, and Jean-Paul Gaultier
