Director Kathryn Bigelow’s buddy-cop-catch-the-wave movie Point Break — a kind of Beverly Hills Surfer — is improbable, pretentious, and dumb. FBI agents Keanu Reeves and Gary Busey go undercover to nab surfers who’ve been robbing banks. There are more slow-motion shots than in a week of MTV. Bigelow (Blue Steel) freights the absurd plot with extensive explorations of the, ahem, spiritual side of standing on a surfboard. Plot complication: Reeves gets wiped out by the sport’s existential mystique. ”It’s the place where you lose yourself and find yourself,” blond beach guru Patrick Swayze informs him. Similar moments of extraordinary depth abound. Be warned: This is not the endless summer; it’s merely endless. D
