On their second release, Walk the Plank, the Pirates of the Mississippi demonstrate a surprising sense of humor, the good taste to record a Guy Clark-Lee Roy Parnell swing tune (”Too Much”), and a knack for crafting catchy, commercial hooks. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the Pirates can’t decide whether they’re a pop group, Southern rockers, or a stompin’ country band. So they water down every genre to try to please everybody, thieving just enough flavor to make songs like the blue-collar anthem ”Uncommon Man” seem mildly authentic. Pirates? Why, yes indeed. C+
