The Trials of Rosie O'Neill

The Trials of Rosie O’Neill is the only show whose cast change has been obviously misguided. The decision to add Ed Asner to supply some macho gruffness to attract male viewers has proven not only sexist, but silly. Asner, as growly investigator Walter Kovatch, is Tyne Daly with a paunch: His self- consciously hard-boiled repartee with the noble public defender played by Sharon Gless is a watered-down but still painfully recognizable version of the clipped badinage that Daly and Gless used to exchange on Cagney & Lacey. But the memory of that show only serves to make Rosie‘s fussy, bleeding-heart drama more annoying. Better they should just scrap this whole show, and start up a series of Cagney Minus Lacey TV movies.C-
