The idea behind Babalu Music! is simple: to excerpt on one convenient videocassette the best musical numbers from I Love Lucy, with an emphasis on the Desi Arnaz Cuban stuff that provided some of the show’s most memorably surreal moments. For whatever reasons, though, compiler-producer ”Weird Al” Yankovic has decided to dilute the concept by including whitebread Tin Pan Alley standards (”Cheek to Cheek”) and sappy love songs (”We’re Having a Baby”). Speaking as a Lucy agnostic, I find most of this only fitfully entertaining (at least out of context), although it should be noted that the ”Babalu” number itself, with a tuxedoed Arnaz going hysterically over the top while whomping on a conga drum, is itself worth the price of the tape.
