Alternately titled A Film Found on a Dump, Jean-Luc Godard’s 1967 masterpiece, Weekend, has finally found its way to video. In this bleak black comedy, two vile and greedy bourgeois (Mireille Darc and Jean Yanne) travel through ”a vale of tears and horror” — an imagined landscape of wrecked cars littered with corpses and smeared with blood. ”My Hermes handbag!” screams the woman, escaping a fiery crash. Radical and definitely not for the squeamish, the film also includes a long, detailed erotic confession in a single take, cannibalism, and an extended and extraordinary tracking shot of an apocalyptic traffic jam.
