My Father's Son

With the new faces of country music dominating the genre these days, several chart-topping singers of old have gotten lost in the shuffle. Multi-instrumentalist-singer Ricky Skaggs won the Country Music Association’s coveted Entertainer of the Year award in 1985, and then promptly sank like a stone, in part because his rural persona evolved into that of a Bible-thumping rube. Now, on the intelligent My Father’s Son, Skaggs keeps the excessive sentimentalism at bay, and with such poignant songs as the title tune and ”Give Us a Happy Home,” reclaims his role as country’s premier voice for rural values.
